Mick can still ‘move freely’ without being recognised

Despite the fact that he’s arguably the most well-known Formula 1 rookie ever, Mick Schumacher says he isn’t often recognised in public.

With his father, Michael, being one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, the spotlight has been firmly on the Haas driver in his first season on the grid, even with him spending most races at the back of it.

That became very much evident to his cousin, David, when the two went out for dinner in Budapest on the weekend of the Hungarian GP earlier this year.

“Suddenly there were 15 people around us at the table,” he told ran.de.

“But he also came on the motorcycle with his own helmet – maybe not the smartest!”

The son of Ralf, currently driving in Formula 3, says that being in motorsport with such a surname hasn’t hugely impacted his life when he’s out in public though.

“It’s not annoying at all,” he added.

“Since I drive in Formula 3, hardly anyone recognises me and I can live my life the way I want. I have my peace and quiet and can eat normally.”

Being in Formula 1 and the son of Michael rather than Ralf, Mick is of course more widely known than his cousin.

Nevertheless, he says similar things about how things are for him when he’s out and about, with the German not often recognised while he’s travelling.

He likes things that way.

“I am not yet recognized at the airport, which is, of course, nice because I can still move freely,” he said as per sport1.de.

It is of course a different matter altogether at the venues during race weekends with huge numbers of F1 fans waiting to meet the drivers.

In that environment though, he enjoys the attention.

“[It is] nice to be recognised, to be asked for photos and autographs,” he added.

A member of the Ferrari academy, Schumacher will undoubtedly become better-known if he is to one day drive for the Italian team like his father did.

While he may like not being recognised much, he still hopes to one day do so and “revive” the Schumacher/Ferrari combination.
