Fernando Alonso has said Red Bull have to fight their own battles if Max Verstappen wants to win the title, rather than relying on others for help.

Alonso’s form has been on an upward trajectory as the season has progressed, with his Alpine gradually climbing the pecking order – evidenced by qualifying P6 in each of the last two races.

Lewis Hamilton’s grid penalty led Alonso to his first top-five start in Formula 1 since the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix, and the 40-year-old put on a masterclass of defensive driving to hold up the Mercedes driver at the Hungarian Grand Prix in August.

With that, Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko intimated that Alonso may be wanting to help Verstappen’s cause in the World Championship battle, if he finds himself in a similar situation again this season.

“We know Alonso is not a big Hamilton fan, which we saw in Budapest,” said Dr Marko, quoted by grandpx.news.

When presented with Marko’s comments, though, Alonso was nonplussed about the idea of aiding the cause of another driver, particularly as he rarely factors in battles at the front – and he never focuses on anything other than how he performs himself.

“I read that, but I always run my own race,” said the Spaniard.

“In Hungary, yes, we managed to fight Hamilton. But that was mainly due to the track. Mercedes and Red Bull are normally much too fast.

“Look at Monza, when Bottas started last and still finished on the podium. So of course, I like to fight with good drivers, but I think Red Bull really has to do it themselves this season.”

Alonso had a troubled race at the Turkish Grand Prix. Having started on the third row, Pierre Gasly’s understeer at Turn 1 saw the AlphaTauri spin the Alpine around, dropping him well towards the back of the field on the first lap.

To compound his misery, he collided with Mick Schumacher later on and was swiftly awarded a five-second penalty for his troubles as a result.

The two-time World Champion could not make his way back through the pack, and will want to forget the race quickly after finishing a lowly P16 and a lap down on the leaders.
