Alonso feels luck is avoiding him ‘big time’ this year
Fernando Alonso feels that luck hasn’t been on his side in 2021 and has in fact been avoiding him “big time”.
Starting in P5 last time out at Istanbul Park, the Alpine driver looked to be in with a chance of scoring some big points, but that chance quickly disappeared.
In wet conditions, he was hit by Pierre Gasly at the start, causing him to drop down to the back of the field, and he was unable to recover, also picking up a penalty for hitting Mick Schumacher.
While he takes the blame for that incident, he feels it was bad luck typical of his season that put him in that position to start with.
“We touched each other, unfortunately he had the spin and I got the penalty. I take it of course because I’m sorry to have the collision with him,” he said.
“That happened only because I was P14. I should not have been, but the luck seems to keep avoiding us this year big time, so I guess we are accommodating a lot for next year.
“It’s frustrating that when we are not competitive we have a very boring race, and when we are competitive we have crazy weather and crazy things happening.
“We’ve been historically this year a little bit less competitive on the intermediate tyres, and the whole race was intermediate, we didn’t even put the dry tyres on.
“So we need to improve our competitive level also on that compound. But it’s frustrating and disappointing.”

While there has been a fair amount of rain at races this season, the grid hadn’t actually raced in wet conditions much prior to the Turkish Grand Prix.
There, the whole race took place on a wet circuit despite the fact that it didn’t actually rain a huge amount on race day, with the circuit just not drying out.
That made the start particularly tricky for the drivers, and next time there are such circumstances, Alonso hopes he’s at the back of the field.
“I think the first corner is always difficult in these conditions,” he added.
“We were nearly for the first time on these wet tyres at the start all together, so these things can happen. Unfortunately, it happened for us when we are top five.
“But I hope there are chaotic races next time when we are behind but not when we are at the front.”
