Ralf: Aston Martin battling ‘a lot of internal problems’
Ralf Schumacher has claimed that he has heard of “a lot of internal problems” within Aston Martin at the moment, which are hampering their progress.
The Silverstone team’s overall performance has reduced in relation to their competitors in 2021, having been race winners and finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship under the Racing Point marque last year.
Currently, however, the team are wedged in the congested midfield battle in Formula 1, with the team currently sixth in the Constructors’ Championship – a full 100 points behind Ferrari in P4 after 10 races.
Schumacher did claim that, while Lawrence Stroll’s takeover of the team was a “clever move”, it has been a time of upheaval that has unsettled staff members.
“They just forgot that you also have to take the employees with you on this path,” he said in an interview with Sport Bild, quoted by RTL. “You can’t turn a cow into a tiger overnight. Some engineers have left in disappointment, and now new people are being brought in.”
The six-time grand prix winner claimed there are currently “a lot of internal problems” in the racing team, despite increased financial clout and a recruitment drive that has included the capture of two senior members of Red Bull’s staff in recent weeks – in the hope of helping Aston Martin climb up the standings.
And Schumacher feels that, should Stroll not see added competitiveness from the team in the future, the Canadian may “eventually ask himself the question of sense” and withdraw his investment from the team.

But, although he earned a podium in Baku and out-qualified Stroll in five of the last six races, Schumacher said the four-time World Champion is currently concerned with “many topics” both on and off track – and that he needs to stamp his authority within the team by getting the better of Stroll regularly.
“That is also his right,” Schumacher caveated when speaking about Vettel’s internal issues. “But the most important thing should be to have your team-mate under control.
“Sergio Perez was always two, three tenths faster than Stroll last year. When I see Perez now at Red Bull in a duel with Max Verstappen, it should actually be easy for Sebastian to be consistently faster than Stroll.”
