Coming so close to scoring his first podium of this season with a win at Silverstone, Ross Brawn felt Sunday’s race was a reminder of how good Charles Leclerc is.

Leclerc hasn’t had much opportunity to show his championship-winning credentials over the past two seasons – Ferrari’s fault, not the driver’s.

While he did grab pole positions in Monaco and again in Azerbaijan, he didn’t take the start at his home race due to a cracked left-rear driveshaft hub, while in the chaos of Baku he dropped to fourth place.

Despite arriving at Silverstone without a single top-three to his name, he came close to bagging his first podium of this season with a race win, leading from laps 1 to 49 only to be passed by Lewis Hamilton with three to go.

Leclerc finished P2 with F1 managing director Brawn saying it was a reminder of how good Leclerc is.

“I agree with the fans that there was only one person who deserved Driver of the Day – and that was Charles Leclerc,” he said in his post-race review.

“It was a stand-out performance from the Monegasque in a Ferrari that isn’t quite on the level to fight at the front in normal conditions.

“Once he took the lead, following Lewis and Max’s tangle, Charles managed the race beautifully.

“His pace on the mediums was very, very good and he didn’t let the power cutting out issue frustrate him.

“This performance reminded us how good he is, after a bit of quiet time lately.

“He is an exceptional driver – and I look forward to the day when Ferrari delivers a car that allows him to take the fight to the frontrunners.”

The Brit’s other star of the grand prix was Lando Norris.

After a horrific mugging incident seven days prior, the McLaren driver admitted he wasn’t in top form for the Silverstone race.

Starting fifth on the grid, he unfortunately had a slow pit stop that potentially cost him third place. P4, though, meant he is the only driver to have scored in all 10 races this season.

Brawn said: “That Lando was disappointed with fourth shows how far he and his McLaren team have come of late and his performance is a nice reflection on the progress he has made.

“He was a bit out of the spotlight on Sunday, and he will have been frustrated to lose third on the road to a slow pit stop, but when he’s slept on it, he will surely reflect on another job well done.

“He’s up to P3 in the Drivers’ Championship, while another heavy points score helps keep his McLaren team ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship fight.”
