Jos Verstappen: ‘Wolff no longer needs to call’
The relationship between Red Bull and Mercedes isn’t the only rapport that soured after last weekend’s run-in between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, with Jos Verstappen also personally going cold on Toto Wolff.
The two men have always enjoyed an amicable relationship, occasionally engaging in small talk on the topic of Max Verstappen’s future as his father once revealed.
But after last Sunday’s on-track squabble and Hamilton and Wolff’s reaction to the events, Jos Verstappen made clear that he no longer wanted to hear from the Mercedes team boss.
"You don’t celebrate your victory with such euphoria when your colleague is still in the hospital,” Jos told F1-insider.com.
"And as for Toto Wolff: We have always had good contact for years, he kept calling and smeared honey around our mouths. I think everyone knows why.
"He didn’t get in touch yesterday. Now he no longer needs to call."
On Sunday, Wolff said he was overjoyed with Hamilton’s 99th career win, insisting that he allowed himself to be happy knowing that Verstappen had escaped the massive crash only bruised and battered.
The Austrian also took exception to comments emanating from the Red Bull camp claiming that Hamilton’s "negligent to dangerous behaviour" on the track – as Helmut Marko put it – had crossed a line.
"When you hear the comments about his driving and the incident, Lewis is the contrary of someone that ever drives dirty," said Wolff.
"I think he’s a sportsman. We have not seen any big incidents with him. And that’s why he keeps his demeanour. And you saw it, the incident wasn’t particularly bothering him."
