Max Verstappen was heard audibly in pain before shouting out expletives following his first-lap crash with Lewis Hamilton at the British Grand Prix.

The championship leader’s race at Silverstone didn’t last a lap after a collision at turn nine with title rival Hamilton as the Briton went on to claim victory in his absence.

Verstappen was taken to hospital for checks after the horror 180mph incident, and the audio footage on the Red Bull team’s radio shed more light on the serious nature of it and how much pain the Dutchman appeared to be in.

Max Verstappen was heard visibly in pain after audio emerged of crash with Lewis Hamilton

In the short audio clip during the aftermath after being sent into the barrier wall by the crash following a clip on his rear right tyre, a member of the Red Bull team asks: ‘Max, are you okay?’

After the audio briefly cuts out, the Dutchman is clearly heard grunting in pain by the incident before he shouts ‘Argh, F***!’.

There was no love lost between the title rivals after Hamilton claimed the victory, with both appearing to blame each other for the turn nine crash, which Hamilton was also handed a 10-second penalty for.

‘Glad I’m OK,’ the Dutchman tweeted. ‘Very disappointed with being taken out like this. The penalty given does not help us and doesn’t do justice to the dangerous move Lewis made on track.

‘Watching the celebrations while still in hospital is disrespectful and unsportsmanlike behaviour but we move on.’

Later on Sunday, Verstappen posted a second tweet, saying: ‘Cleared from the hospital after all the checks were OK. Thank you to everyone for all the nice messages and best wishes.’

Reflecting from his viewpoint, Hamilton said: ‘I have been giving my all this week. I always try to be measured in battles with Max and he is aggressive.

‘I was fully alongside him and he did not give me the space but regardless of whether I agree with the penalty I was not going to let anything get in the way of the national anthem and the British flag.’

There is history of issues between the pair after coming together twice before this season

The pair have history after coming together twice before this season, in the opening race at Bahrain when Verstappen went off track before being asked to give the position he gained back and in Imola when Hamilton’s front wing was damaged by Verstappen and he was sent into the gravel.

The result could have big implications in the title race after Hamilton’s victory slashed Verstappen’s lead at the top from 33 points to just eight in what is shaping up to be the closest battle in some time.

The Mercedes star was labelled ‘amateur’ and ‘desperate’ by Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

‘Every driver that has driven at this circuit knows you do not stick a wheel up the inside of Copse,’ Horner fumed to the race director.

Hamilton received racist messages on Instagram with one user using a gorilla emoji (left)

‘That’s an enormous accident and it was Max’s corner. As far as I’m concerned, full blame is on Hamilton for that incident, he should never have been in that position. Thank god Max has walked away unscathed.’

Hamilton suffered vile racist abuse following his controversial victory.

He received messages on Instagram from his Sunday evening upload that included monkey emojis.

One user wrote: ‘I was his fan before this race! very bad… Sir Lewis Hamilton’ before adding a gorilla emoji, while another message used monkey emojis.
